The New York Yankees crushed the Oakland Athletics to advance to the ALDS.
One Swing Of The Bat
The first inning was pretty uneventful for the Athletics as Luis Severino had no problem facing the first three batters of the game. Severino struck out two batters while retiring the side in order. The bottom half of the inning was much different for the Yankees as their offensive power showed off quickly. Aaron Judge hit a homer on his first swing of the game allowing Andrew McCutchen to score. New York was up 2-0 as Liam Hendriks struggled on the mound.
Severino looked even more solid at top of the mound. Oakland left a man on base during the second inning, nonetheless the Yankees’ starter struck out five of the first seven batters he faced. On the other hand Hendriks still struggled through the second frame. The Australian pitcher left the game after pitching just one inning and leaving two men on base. Lou Trivino took the mound for the A’s to finish of the inning aided by a double play. Trivino retired the side in order an inning later.
A’s Kept Trying
Severino started losing control of his pitches on the fourth inning. After allowing hits two the first two men he faced he walked outfielder Ramon Laureano. Bases were loaded with two outs. The Yankees got out of trouble as Marcus Semien struck out to end the inning. The Athletics could not get on the scoreboard as Trivino managed to keep the score intact.
Severino once again struggled at the beginning of the fifth inning. He left the game after pitching four and a third frames. He left two men on base. Dellin Betances got the final two outs of the fifth. New York’s lead was still intact trough five as the Athletics left the bases loaded once again.
The Dormant Offense Woke Up
Despite not generating any runs after the first inning, the Yankees blew the ballgame wide open during the sixth inning. Reliever Fernando Rodney came in to the game to replace Shawn Kelley who came in to pitch just an inning later. Judge doubled before the former Twin had a chance to settle in the mound and the Yankees were once again off and running. Center fielder Aaron Hicks then doubled himself allowing Judge to score. Yankees were now up by three runs.
Rodney then left the game and Blake Treinen took the ball on the mound. Treinen then walked the first batter he saw (Giancarlo Stanton). Luke Voit then tripled to right field allowing both Hicks and Stanton to score. A batter later Didi Gregorius hit a sacrifice fly allowing hicks to score. Just like that, the Yankees were up 6-0.
The Final Push
David Robertson replaced Betances on the mound for he start of the seventh inning. Robertson had no trouble in the seventh as he retired the side in order. On the other hand, Treinen allowed a base on balls. Despite the mistake in location the three outs were no problem for the A’s pitcher and the seventh inning was over.
The Yankees made another pitching change as Zach Britton replaced Robertson to begin the eighth frame. He was welcomed into the ballgame with a single by Matt Chapman. That was followed with a home run by Khris Davis. The A’s were officially on the scoreboard as the score was 6-2. Stanton did the same in the bottom of the eighth putting New York up by five. 7-2. Aroldis Chapman came on the top of ninth inning to close things up in the Bronx. Chapman did so with a groundout and a couple of strikeouts. Yankees will move on.
The Yankees will clash the Red Sox on the first game of the ALDS this Friday at 7:32 PM E.T on TBS.
