Hockey is back! Although the preseason games may not mean much to the teams, hockey is back. But, it goes for every sport, drama took place during the offseason and now as we head on closer to the October 8th season opener, there’s a few storylines to watch. Here are just a few of these storylines:

San Jose Sharks Stars Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau: San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson is trying an unorthodox version of a rebuild it seems. The unorthodox part about it is that the Sharks are a playoff contender. The rebuild part about it is the fact that, in recent months, both Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau have been subjected to some trade rumors. Mr. Wilson has one problem moving both or even just one of these players: no-trade clauses that will more than likely not be waived unless the team can persuade the stars to waive the clause. If the Sharks are able to move one of these players, the chances of it being a blockbuster are slim to none and would probably push the team out of playoff contention.

Boston Bruins Moving a Defencemen?: The Bruins are looking for offensive help, whereas teams like the Detroit Red Wings and the Edmonton Oilers need help on the defensive side of things. Moving a defencemen like Johnny Boychuck would make a little sense. It would depend on the flip side of the potential trade as well as how well the Bruins start the season defensively.

Carolina Goaltender Cam Ward available?: Here’s the hook, Cam Ward had a down year last year, so much so that he, like Roberto Luongo (before he was traded), lost his role as the starter. The line, Ward is on the block whether he really likes it or not and the sinker, he may not even be a Hurricane come Regular Season. Several teams are in the market for Goaltending, not to mention that his contract is manageable for several teams. I’d imagine that the Canes would look for either prospects or a possible replacement for Eric Staal if he’s to be dealt as well.
