As we sit here in the sweltering heat of mid august. We are far remove from that cold February night where 1,000’s of eagles, myself included, crowded the streets of Philadelphia to celebrate a championship 57 years in the making. The Eagles have a new goal this season, that is to duplicate there success and bring home a second consecutive Lombardi trophy. And it starts right here in training camp in front of a raucous crowd of 35,000 at Lincoln Finacial Field.
The High Points
By far the brightest spot on this eagles roster that was showcased in todays practice session was the defense. Particularly the front four who welcomed Michael Bennet and Haloti Ngata in the offseason was very impressive. They were plugging running lanes and showing a quick first step when rushing the quarterback. Furthermore rookie tight end Dallas Goedert shined as he worked with the second team offense led by Nate Sudfeld. He ran crisp routes and made some unbelievably tough grabs in the redone drills. If training camp is any indicator he should have a great season.
The Low Points
By far the lowest point of the morning was the performance of 3rd string QB Nate Sudfeld. He was consistently late on throws and took way too much time with ball in his hands. It became painfully obvious early on that if he wasn’t wearing a red jersey he would not be standing upright. This issues seems to have caught the eye of the Eagles front office because shortly after training camp the defending champs signed Christian Hackenberg to a roster spot. If Sudfeld doesn’t pick it up and have a better showing in his next preseason appearance he might be shown the door.
2018 Expectations
Overall the Birds passed the eye test with flying colors, even though there are some things they need to sure up such as linebacker play. They should have no problem with making a deep run into the playoffs and contending for a second straight title. QB Carson Wentz looks ready to go and should start week 1 vs Atlanta after coming off a nasty ACL injury. If not Philadelphia has the best back up in the NFL Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles to take his place.
