One of the staples of human history is athletic competition. Even as far back as the Romans and the Colosseum, men and women alike have indulged in watching competitors do battle. But now, for the first time in centuries, the sports we have come to know, love, and obsess over have come to a halt. Thanks in large part to the COVID 19, or coronavirus, outbreak. Although it is tough, with the absence of athletics, we have come to realize just how much we took them for granted. Here are just a few of examples.

Embed from Getty ImagesSince June of 1946 the NBA has been a permanent fixture in American life. And now it is at a standstill. No longer can we be captivated by a gravity-defying LeBron James dunk or jaw-dropping Stephen Curry shots from way beyond the arc. And we are not the only ones affected. Not only is basketball popular in America it is also adored on a global scale. Basketball is one of the few sports that bring together people from all walks of life. Around this time we are usually debating each other about what will happen in the playoffs. But now we have to sit and wait. However, that wait may not be long though. The league is eyeing a return to play in the early summer with hopes of the NBA finals being played around Labor Day. We all hope they are right.
NHL On Hold
Embed from Getty ImagesThere is no better place to find a perfect mix of physicality and grace than a hockey game. The skill it takes to navigate the ice at their size and still deliver bone-crushing hits, is one of the most entertaining things in sports. To lose the NHL, who suspended play on March 12th, is to lose one of the most exciting events of the late spring. The race toward the Stanley Cup is one of the most exhilarating things you can partake in as a hockey fan. Especially this season, as many division races are becoming neck and neck. But there is hope, as the league will discuss play resuming after the mandatory quarantines are lifted. If so, life will be much better with playoff puck.
MLB Opening Day Pushed Back
Embed from Getty ImagesBaseball is America’s oldest sport. And in being so, its postponement has led to great sadness. Still highly regarded as “America’s favorite past time,” baseball has a special place in all of our hearts. We wait with bated breath for pitchers and catchers to report. We yearn for an early glimpse of our favorite teams in Spring Training.
It’s easy to grow distant from the game with its latest issues and scandals. But marathon games and the Astros cheating scandal aside, we need baseball. Nothing compares to the beauty of Mike Trout sending a ball into orbit, or Justin Verlander leaving a batter stupefied behind the plate. And now that we can’t have it we want it even more. Hopefully, the MLB can and will begin the season on or before July 1st as they expect.
Whether it’s the MLB, NBA or NHL we need our sports. Not just for the excitement it brings, but for the distraction it creates.
