Kansas City Royals at New York Mets

The Mets beat the Royals Game 3, giving them some hope and momentum going into Game 4. The Royals will send Game 1 winner Chris Young up against Steven Matz of the Mets. Young pitched the final three innings of the 14 inning win, but only threw 53 pitches. Matz last pitched in the fourth and final game of the NLCS, going four and two-thirds, giving up only one run.
Alcides Escobar led off the first inning (again) with a base hit. Escobar stole second as Ben Zobrist struck out, but Zobrist stepped on the plate and Ecscobar was called out due to interference. Matz got Lorenzo Cain to fly out to right to end a scoreless first inning.
Young got out of the first inning on just ten pitches. Curtis Granderson grounded out to second and David Wright flew out to left for the first two outs. Then Daniel Murphy hit a line drive to right field, but Alex Rios was able to make an excellent diving catch for the third out.
Conforto Hits One Out
Michael Conforto came up in the bottom of the third looking to become the first base runner for the Mets. He did better than that, putting the first pitch he saw into the upper deck down the right field line to become the first rookie to hit a home run in the World Series since Buster Posey in 2010 and give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Wilmer Flores lined a single to center, then advanced to second on a wild pitch with the pitcher batting. Matz put down a perfect bunt to move Flores over to third with one out. Granderson hit one to right field, and Rios made the catch, but it appeared that Rios forgot how many outs there were and did not fire a throw home at first. Flores scored with ease. The Royals challenged that Flores left early, but the call stood and the run scored. Wright drew a two-out walk, but Murphy popped out to second to end the inning. The Mets led after three innings, 2-0.

Salvador Perez hit a one-out double off of Cespedes’ legs in the top of the fifth. Alex Gordon singled to right to drive in Perez to bring the Royals to within one run. Kendrys Morales came in to pinch-hit for Young and singled up the middle. Escobar flied out to right field to end the inning.
Conforto Hits Another
Danny Duffy took over for Young in the bottom of the fifth and was greeted by Conforto’s second home run of the night. Duffy got Flores on strikes and Matz lined out to center field. Granderson hit a soft grounder to first for an infield single. Granderson was caught stealing for the third out, but the Mets extended their lead to 3-1.

Zobrist led off the sixth with a double to right center field. Cain singled up the middle to drive in Zobrist, and Matz’s night was over. Jon Niese came in with a runner on first and nobody out. Cain stole second, but he was not able to advance on a line drive to Cespedes. Mike Moustakas hit a ground ball to third for the second out, and Cain had to stay at second. Bartolo Colon came in to finish the inning for Niese. Colon tried to pick off Cain at second, but threw it into center field and Cain advanced to third with two outs. Perez battled, but ended up striking out on the 10th pitch of the at-bat.
Mets Bullpen Falters
Tyler Clippard came in to pitch the eighth, but he gave up one-out walks to Zobrist and Cain. The Mets brought Jeurys Familia in to attempt a five-out save. Hosmer hit a soft chopper that went under Murphy’s glove. Zobrist scored and Cain went to third on the play. Moustakas hit a single to right field to drive in Cain and Hosmer went to third.

Perez hit one to right-center field to drive in Hosmer and move Moustakas to third. Gordon hit a ground ball to second that Murphy picked up, tagged Perez, and flipped the ball out of his glove to first for an inning-ending double play. The Royals took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning.

Royals Bullpen Shuts Mets Down
Wade Davis came in to pitch in the bottom of the eighth for a potential six-out save. He set the Mets down in order and the Royals led 5-3 going into the ninth inning.
Hansel Robles came in and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Mets. The inning included an at-bat by Davis, who had no intention of swinging the bat. Robles gave the Mets one last chance to prevent a three games to one deficit.
Davis started by striking out Wright for the first out. Murphy hit one through Moustakas’ glove for a one-out single. Cespedes hit a single to right and runners were on first and second with one out and Lucas Duda coming to the plate. Davis got Duda to hit a soft line drive to Moustakas, who threw to first to double off Cespedes to end the game.
Player of the Game: Salvador Perez
Perez had three hits in four at-bats, one RBI and a run scored. He scored the first run for the Royals after he led off the top of the fifth inning. Perez also threw out Granderson to end the bottom of the fifth inning. He drove in the third and final run of the eighth inning with a single to right.
Game 5 (Royals lead 3-1)
The Royals will play the Mets in New York for Game 5 of the World Series. The Mets have their backs up against the wall, but they are going to come out fighting in Game 5. The Royals have Edinson Volquez taking the mound to try and finish the Series. Volquez pitched six innings, giving up three runs in a game that the Royals won in 14 innings. After the game, Volquez found out that his father had died earlier that day. He rejoined the team for Game 4. The Mets are going with Matt Harvey, who also went six innings and gave up three runs in Game 1.
