Manchester United had no other option but to get three points from 16th place Sunderland if they wanted to maintain themselves in the top four.
Sunderland missed a few opportunities to go take the lead in the first half, and it was not until the minute 66′ when Radamel Falcao was brought down in the box by John O’Shea and resulted in a penalty kick. Referee took out the red card immediately but gave it to the wrong player. Unfortunately, Wes Brown suffered from this terrible call and was sent off. Wayne Rooney took the penalty kick and hit a superb shot on the bottom right corner of the keeper who guessed correctly, but was not enough to block it.
Six minutes before the game was over Rooney scored off a rebound for his second goal of the night to give Manchester United the valuable victory.
This keeps Manchester United in 4th, just one point behind Arsenal who sits third with 51 points. Manchester United will visit Newcastle United on Wednesday, March 4th. As for Sunderland, they will visit Hull City Tuesday, March 3rd.
