After a disappointing loss in the second round of this years Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins thought it was time for a change in the front office and fired General Manager Ray Shero.

The Penguins were up 3-1 in the series before losing three straight, including Game 7 at home against the New York Rangers.

With a Vacant GM and the NHL entry level draft coming up June 27-28, the Penguins are actively searching to fill the void beforehand. Today we learned that the Penguins front office has reached out to NBC analyst Pierre McGuire in hopes of finding their new GM.

McGuire confirmed the interest earlier today. “I met with the Pittsburgh Penguins,” McGuire said. “I talked with the Pittsburgh Penguins. So have a lot of other people.”

This may be just a publicity stunt, but McGuire has a history with Pittsburgh. He was a scout with them in 1990, and an assistant coach, under Scotty Bowman, when Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup back-to-back in 1991 and 1992.

The new Penguins GM will have to get to work immediately in preparing for the draft. They will also have to decide Head Coach Dan Bylsma’s fate. Bylsma was retained after the season, but his status entering next year is still up in the air.
