Paul Johnson Announces His Retirement

At 2:30 pm, Paul Johnson held a team meeting with his players. The 10-year Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets coach announced that he would be retiring.

Johnson will retire as the fourth-winningest coach in Georgia Tech history with 82 wins. His triple option offense made him famous.  He took the Yellow Jackets to four ACC Championship Games, and won one of them. In what was his greatest season at Georgia Tech, the team won the ACC Championship, clinching a berth in the Orange Bowl. They beat Mississippi State to claim his only BCS win at the school.  Johnson’s record against in state rival University of Georgia has been less than stellar.  Johnson’s Yellow Jackets only defeated the Bulldogs three times since Johnson began in 2008.

The Beginning

Johnson started his coaching career at Navy, where he found little success. He left after winning 45 games in six seasons to coach Georgia Southern. Johnson found huge success at Georgia Southern, winning 62 of his 72 games. He also won two National Championships with the team.

While Johnson goes on to enjoy his retirement, Georgia Tech is left looking for a coach.  As we approach that time of year when many coaches find themselves looking for jobs.  Georgia Tech should have plenty of options.  Stay tuned to the AOSN as we follow this story.
