Shohei Ohtani could go under the knife. The Los Angeles Angels reported this Wednesday that an MRI scan showed new damage in Ohtani’s right elbow. A UCL reconstruction surgery is the “recommended plan of care” according to the organization. Ohtani has been going back and forth from D.L as he was injured in late June. His last pitching appearance was this past Sunday as the Angels faced the Houston Astros in a 4-2 losing effort.

The Japanese pitcher has taken the mound in ten games this season. He has a 4-2 record, allowing 3.1 runs per game and pitching for a total of 51.2 innings. Offensively, Ohtani has a .276 batting average, 16 home runs and 44 runs batted in.
What Does This Mean For The Angels?
For starters, if the Angels do go through with the recommended surgery, Ohtani would be out of action for at least most of the 2019 season. This could also impact further contract negotiations as the pitcher/hitter only signed a one-year deal. While the Angels are not postseason contenders, one of their biggest selling points would be out due to injury once again. Not good news to say the least.
Is This The End Of The Ohtani Pitching/Batting Combo?
It has to be. Ohtani has been plagued with injuries through the year and it was only a matter of time before something serious happened. The Angels avoided this twice and they knew Ohtani had a grade 1 sprain before signing. Let’s not forget that the damage to his elbow occurred after only 10 starts on the mound. Due to his restricted work schedule, pitching every seven days, even bigger problems were avoided. The decision to go on with the Tommy John surgery is still pending.
