The Texas Rangers get Sam Dyson from Miami Marlins for AAA catcher Tomas Telis and AA pitcher Cody Ege.

Dyson was drafted in the 4th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and made his debut in 2012. He has a career 3.87 ERA in 82 appearances in 4 seasons. His fastball averages over 95 miles per hour.

The Rangers are adding depth to their pitching staff as much for 2016 as for the current playoff race. They are only 3 games out of the second Wild Card spot, so it is not inconceivable that they can make the playoffs this season. But their plan seems to be to stock up on pitchers that are under team control for at least next year. They acquired Cole Hamels earlier in the week, and he is under contract through the 2018 season.

Dyson is 3-3 with a 3.68 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 44 innings for the Marlins this season. He has only given up 3 earned runs in his last 9 appearances while striking out 8. He will be a middle reliever in the Rangers bullpen.

Dyson will not be arbitration eligible until after the 2017 season.

All MLB trades are pending medical reviews.
