Once an unknown baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates that was on the fence of making the big leagues out of camp or being sent down to minors. Josh Harrison, 27-years old, had a breakout campaign in 2014 and reaped the rewards today receiving a 4-year $27.3 M contract extension. In 2014 he knocked 58 total extra-base hits, including 38 doubles and 13 homers, and stole 18 bases in addition.

Harrison brings enough all-around production to the offense but where he shines is on defense. His versatility and athleticism brings a lot of help to this ball club. He has the ability to play third, second, shortstop, as well as the outfield. He netted nine defensive runs saved at third base in 2014, placing him tied for eighth, and he was able to post that in only 72 games at the hot corner.

In short, Harrison’s versatility and athleticism provides the Pirates with a lot of flexibility and added value. Harrison is a great secondary piece that allows the GM to add other pieces down the road if needed. He will be penciled into third base everyday in 2015. Harrison has the ability to be an All-Star from here on out based off his ability and ceiling. Harrison deserved this extension and the Pirates were smart to do so.
