The first no-hitter of the 2015 MLB season was pitched tonight by Giants pitcher Chris Heston in a 5-0 win against the New York Mets.

Heston is a 27 year old rookie who was selected in the 12th round of the 2009 MLB Draft, and didn’t even make the Giants’ opening day roster this season. He came into tonight’s game with a 5-4 record and a 4.29 ERA, but the unlikely hero silenced the Mets’ crowd, striking out 11 batters while throwing 72 of his 110 pitches for strikes. He rarely let the ball leave the infield, and became the only pitcher in 115 years to throw a no-hitter while hitting 3 or more batters. Heston’s no-hitter was the 17th in the Giants’ 132 year history, and 4th in the last 4 years.

After striking out the last three batters he faced, his teammates mobbed him, and he received a standing ovation from a crowd of Mets faithful. “It hasn’t sunk in yet. Looking forward to catching my breath and celebrating a little bit” Heston said during a post-game interview. “Lot of emotions going through my mind right now.”
