From Villain to Hero, Wong’s HR Lifts Cardinals

Just about a year ago, the Cardinals were facing the Red Sox in the world series. In the final inning of game 4 of that series, Kolten Wong had a memorable play that will be remembered by many. Boston’s closer Koji Uehara picked off Wong at first base to end the game while the tying run was at the plate.

Wong was very emotional in his post game interview lamenting that base running blunder, but fast forward to today and Kolten Wong has become a hero for the Cards. Wong didn’t only hit a huge walk off home run today, but he also hit a go ahead two run home run in crucial game 3 of the NLDS.

Today’s home run is very meaningful for the Cardinals though, first and foremost, they got the win, but most importantly, the Cardinals prevented from falling 2-0 in the series which is a deficit that is very unlikely to come back from.

In what was a back and forth fight today, the Giants appeared to have taken the momentum to their side after they tied the game in the top of the 9th off of closer Trevor Rosenthal who threw a wild pitch that allowed the run to score.

Rosenthal managed to get out of the 9th inning after loading the bases, then Wong’s heroics took over and hit a line drive shot to the right field seats of off pitcher Sergio Romo.

The series will now shift to San Francisco, game 3 will be held on Tuesday, October 14th. The Giants still haven’t announced who will start for them, but all signs lead to believe that it could be Tim Hudson. Meanwhile the Cardinals will most likely send John Lackey to the bump.
