The Yankees have acquired another big bat as they have traded for Mariners’ Edwin Encarnacion according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Edwin Encarnación has been traded from the Seattle Mariners to the New York Yankees, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. Encarnación currently leads the American League with 21 home runs. The Mariners’ teardown is in full bloom and the Yankees get another big bat.

The Deal
According to reports, Seattle will cover most of the money left of the first baseman’s contract. Furthermore, the M’s will also cover a quarter of a potential $20 million buyout clause for the 2020 season. The Mariners will get relief pitcher Juan Then in exchange.
Who Is Juan Then?
The trade gets a little bit trickier once you get to know the Dominican pitcher. Then was originally signed by Seattle as an international free agent in 2016. The Dominican righty went 20-2 with a 2.64 ERA in his debut season with the Domican Summer League Mariners
What Does the Edwin Encarnacion Trade Mean?
For starters, the Yankees have gotten a hold of another big bat for their already solid lineup. Edwin Encarnacion leads the American League with 21 homers and will be a big help for New York. He is expected to take on the DH role from Luke Voit, who has appeared in the spot 21 times this season. As for the Mariners, this move sees them embrace a new rebuilding phase as another former star has jumped the boat.
