A lot of rumors began last summer on whether David Luiz would remain in Chelsea. Those rumors came true as the Brazilian defender and midfielder was sold to PSG on Friday. Chelsea announced, “Chelsea Football Club and Paris Saint-Germain have agreed terms for the transfer of David Luiz to the French club.” The move is now subject to David Luiz agreeing personal terms with PSG and passing a medical examination.
However, not everyone agreed with the fee of 50 million euros which took to bring the Brazilian to the French capital. Others believed the appropriate fee was around 40 million euros. David Luiz is now the most expensive defender in history. He was excellent for Chelsea a season ago under interim manager Rafa Benitez. His versatility and great athleticism were fully displayed as he would occasionally slide into the midfield and netted a total of six goals and four assists. That is quite remarkable considering the fact that he is a defender.
Rumors began during the summer as the new manager, Jose Mourinho questioned his defending and decision making a bit off of his plan for Chelsea. Many agree with the Chelsea manager because he isn’t the soundest defender and is caught many times out of position when he goes up for an attack leaving a breach in the Blue’s defense.
Mourinho didn’t rely on the Brazilian like Rafa Benitez did last season. He preferred the du team of Gary Cahill and John Terry to secure his back line. David Luiz made 30 appearances last season but was only limited to 19 total appearances and just 15 starts this season. He failed to score on goal this season and was only able to add only one assist. However he was moved around in the central defense and central midfield this season which gave him more experience working on the midfield which could benefit PSG greatly for the 2014-2015 season.
It is a great blow to Barcelona as reports indicated that they were also chasing to sign the Brazilian in an attempt for him to become the heir of Carles Puyol who has recently announced his retirement from the world of Football. David Luiz is one for the future since he is far more poised on the ball than most center-backs. His rare blend of size and pace following his effective skills in the air and ability to make up ground quickly in defense will greatly strengthen the French giants back line as he will also be paired up with Brazilian companion, Thiago Silva. Two lethal defenders playing for PSG next season, looks like we will have to wait till that season starts.
