News and Notes:
Quarterbacks
-
Orgeon QB Justin Herbert announced on Wednesday that he will return to school for his senior year. Herbert was my number one QB this year. Now there will be heavy competition from Ohio State Dwayne Haskins, Duke Daniel Jones and WVU Will Grier to claim the top QB spot in this draft class. Meanwhile, Herbert will have to compete with Georgia Jake Fromm and Alabama Tua Tagovailoa in the 2020 class. Herbert was on the fence for a few months before now. Most assume it is due to his brother, Patrick Herbert, committing to Oregon this year as a TE. So we might see quite a few Herbert to Herbert touchdowns in 2019.

Michigan QB Shea Patterson announced this week that he will return to school for his senior season. He will play another year at Michigan rather than leaving school early for the 2019 NFL Draft. Many players should leave school early to get their money while it’s on the table in front of them. This is a great decision for Patterson. Before the season began, most people pegged him to go in Round two or three. Although he had the potential to jump into the First Round. But Patterson looked shaky all season and raised more questions than answers to the existing ones. It will help him greatly to have an year with Jim Harbaugh before taking the step to the pros.
Linemen

Mississippi State DL Jeffery Simmons declared for the 2019 NFL Draft this week. Simmons has a past marred by an alleged domestic abuse incident. Miss State gave him a second chance and he took full advantage of it and was dominant this season. Some teams may have Simmons off their draft boards due to this incident. Simmons has First Round talent on the field though, so there will be interest to see where he goes.

Michigan LB Devin Bush declared for the 2019 NFL Draft this week. This is great news for this LB class. Especially with a report that Alabama LB Mack Wilson may stay in school for another year. Wilson is my second ranked LB and Bush is my third in this class. This is a top-heavy LB class with a steep drop-off after Bush. Both of these players declaring for the draft will be crucial for LB needy teams.
