CHAMPIONS! Chelsea Wrap Up Barclay’s Premier League Title
Chelsea needed just three points out of four games to crown themselves champions, and took on Crystal Palace today at Stamford Bridge, where they had not lost a game all season.
Chelsea was dominant in the first half and had a few opportunities by Nemanja Matic and Didier Drogba to score, but they were denied by Julian Speroni in the Crystal Palace goal. It took until the end of the first half for Chelsea to take the lead. In the 44th minue, Eden Hazard controlled the ball on the left side and exchanged a quick 1-2 with William. Hazard was then brought down inside the box, and it was an easy decision for referee to award the penalty.
The newly-crowned Premier League Player of the Year Hazard stepped up to take the penalty kick and was denied by Speroni’s leg. Luckily for Hazard and Chelsea, the ball rebounded straight back to Hazard, who headed it to the opposite side of Speroni.
Crystal Palace tried to create opportunities in the second half, but the Chelsea back line was impossible to breach, and in spite of Wilfried Zaha’s and Yaya Sonogo’s best efforts, they were simply unable to make a breakthrough. At the other end, Branislav Ivanovic and Drogba wasted chances to increase Chelsea’s lead.
In the end, and as usual for a Jose Mourinho-coached team, the one-goal lead was enough for Chelsea to crown themselves champions of the Premier League for just the fifth time in the club’s history following their titles in 1955, 2005, 2006, and 2010. They have not lost a game at home this season, have conceded the least amount of goals, and are the second-highest scoring team in the league, and really deserve this championship as they have been the most consistent team in the Premier League since the beginning of the season.
This is Mourinho’s third league title with Chelsea, and TheAOSN would like to extend their congratulations to Mourinho and the club for capping off their great run this season with the title.
