The 2018 season has started out with some shocking trades and releases. Josh Gordon is the latest to fall victiom to a management decision that leaves fans shaking their heads.
Gordon has had his struggles. He began his career with the Browns in 2012 and posted solid numbers as one of the Browns leading receivers. After playing six games in 2014 Gordon was suspended for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
League and team violations kept him out the remainder of the 2014 season and the 2015 season. Gordon was slated to come back in 2016 when he announced his decision to enter an inpatient rehab facility to help him overcome the demons that had kept him from playing.
Through it all the Browns stuck by Josh Gordon and when he was ready to come back in 2017, the Browns took him in to the fold. Everyone was inspired and encouraged. In the five games he played Gordon was the team’s fifth leading receiver.
2o18 showed promise for Gordon as he helped the Browns overcome their losing streak with his touchdown catch against Pittsburgh. Gordon was battling a hamstring injury going into that game. Earlier today it was announced that he would not play Sunday against the Saints.
Before fantasy players could adjust their teams to allow for the injury word came that Gordon had been released. The Browns released the following statement on Twitter:
What’s next for Gordon?
There are teams who are interested in Gordon. He is talented. Josh Gordon has worked hard to come back. He made personal and professional sacrifices. But, the question is, is it enough? Clearly the Browns did not think so. Is the problem bigger than a hamstring injury? Do the Browns think Gordon has had a relapse his his recovery?
Word has it that trade calls are coming in as I write. Some possible teams to pick him up include New England. Gordon would fit well into their passing game. Tom Brady to Josh Gordon could be a good match up. Dallas is another team with a game plan that could be a good transition for Gordon. Oakland under Jon Gruden has made some interesting trades this season. Philadelphia and Buffalo are other options.
All speculation aside we wish Gordon the best on a personal and professional level and look forward to seeing what comes next for him and his career.
