Brewers Struggle In Mid-July

The Milwaukee Brewers have had a relatively good season so far. While they have not been able to take away the lead from the Chicago Cubs, they’ve kept close tabs on them for the most part of the first half of the season. July has not been their month, however, as they have had their fair share of problems.

Not A Good Start

July kicked off with a Brewers’ win over the Reds. Sadly, they lost their next three ballgames against Cincinnati to end their first series of the month. They went into the All-Star break losing their second series of the month against the Pirates. Milwaukee was unable to rebound after the break as they lost a series to the Giants at home. Do you see a pattern? Those are all last place or next to last place teams. More on that issue later.

Christian Yelich has seen the ball well this past two weeks as he bats for .385. His run production is extremely low, however, as he only has a single homer and run batted in before Tuesday’s game. The same can be said about Mike Moustakas. His last couple of weeks resume to a .194 batting avg. 1 home run and 2 RBI. Pitchers can do a great job but if the offense doesn’t hold on to their end of the bar, there’s only so much they can do.

Brewers’ Bizarre Habit

The Brewers are a different team when playing against those in the bottom of their divisions. This month alone they lost series against the last-placed teams of the NL Central and NL West. This is not exclusive to July as June also featured series loses to some of the same teams. What’s more, they have been swept by the Marlins. Yes, the Marlins.

A Tricky Situation

Milwaukee is in a tricky spot in the middle of July. On one hand, they are still keeping up with the Cubs in the fight for the top of the division. On the other hand, they’ve allowed St. Louis to catch up as they are just half a game away from them.  They might drop to third place in the NL Central if their stage fright against inferior opponents persists.  It has not been their month so far and things could get worse as there is still a lot of baseball left in July.
