Last week Bayern Munich saw themselves down 3-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal against FC Porto. We talked about how it looked like German club dominance in Europe was coming to an end, but Bayern proved us wrong on Tuesday night in the second leg. They entered Allianz Arena with the hopes of coming back up from the 3-1 deficit.
Bayern kept their UCL run alive when they dominated FC Porto on the field with a score of 6-1. The first five goals came in the first half and saw FC Porto behind in aggregate with the hopes of coming back to take it to overtime, but Xabi Alonso added another goal in the second half while Jackson Martinez got one back as well. Thiago Alcantara, Jerome Boateng, Thomas Muller, and Robert Lewandowski were all able to get goals in the second leg.
Porto came into this second leg with a good lead and seemed to have gotten too comfortable. They were not able to get anything going and were drained by the end of the first half.
Bayern Munich dominated the game early and the first goal came in the 14th minute when Thiago was able to head it in past goalkeeper Fabiano. Mario Gotze saved the ball from going out on the left side of the field and Juan Bernat was able to get the pass. Bernat then crossed it inside the box and Thiago was there to head it in and make 1-0 (2-3 in aggregate).
Boateng made it 2-0 eight minutes later on a header as well. A corner kick was given to Bayern Munich and it was Muller that crossed it inside the box. Holger Badstuber won the header and had enough power to head towards Boateng, who got good contact with the ball and and made the game 2-0 (3-3 on aggregate).
Lewandowski made it 3-0 in the 27th minute with yet another beautiful header for the German squad. Thiago was able to find Phillip Lahm in the right side of the field and not once did the ball touch the ground after this. Lahm crossed it inside the box and Muller was there to chip it over to Lewandowski. The aggregate score was now in favor of Bayern, 4-3.
Thomas Muller made it 4-0 just 11 minutes later. Thiago was part of the play, once again, and found Muller on his right side. Muller then shot the ball from 30 yards out and saw the ball deflect of Bruno Martins Indi and through the legs of Fabiano to make it 5-3 on aggregate.
In the 40th minute, Lewandowski found the net once again and made it 5-0 (6-3 on aggregate). Muller took on two defenders inside the box and was strong during the battle. Muller won and found Lewandowski in the middle of the box, who then played around with the ball. With his right foot he was able to find a spot and get it past Fabiano.
FC Porto was able to get one goal back when Martinez got the ball past Manuel Neuer. Hector Herrera gave a low cross to Martinez from outside the right side of the box and was able to head it in to make it 6-4 on aggregate.
As the game was coming to an end, Ivan Marcano was shown a red card and Xabi Alonso stepped up to take the free kick from about 25 yards. Xabi was able to get it over the wall and past Fabiano into the top left corner to make it 7-4 on aggregate and end Porto’s dream of advancing to the semi-finals.
Bayern will advance to the semi-final and await to see who their opponent will be for the next round. The man of the match goes out to Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara who was able to get one goal and two assists to help his team advance.
