Day four kicked off today with Switzerland facing Ecuador in which the Swiss got a late goal in stoppage time to win 2-1. France defeated Honduras 3-0 where the Honduras team was down 10 men and didn’t have a chance against the French. The third match took place in the Maracana where Lionel Messi and his Argentina team faced Edin Dzeko and Bosnia Herzegovina.
In a match that we expected more from Argentina, it wasn’t much of an entertaining match. Everyone expected more from Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain. Argentina seems to be one of the favorites to win the World Cup, but the way they played in the field doesn’t give them any chance of winning the cup.
The first half kicked in and Bosnia looked like the favorite one. But five minutes in, Argentina received a free kick and a cross from Lionel Messi bounced of Defender Sead Kolašinac to give Argentina the 1-0 lead on a own goal.
Bosnia had more chances of scoring in the first half than Argentina had. Many balls deflected of goalkeeper Romero saving Argentina from losing the lead. Lionel Messi wasn’t himself in the field. Of course, he doesn’t have FC Barcelona to hand him the ball but even when he did have it, he wouldn’t do much with it. When he lost it, he wouldn’t fight back and gave up on getting the ball back. The first half ended and to our behalf, it was boring.
The second half kicked off and Argentina still wasn’t the team we expected to see. Fernando Gago and Gonzalo Higuain came in the second half. A little into the second half, they began picking up their game and were creating some beautiful plays but that still wasn’t enough for Argentina. It wasn’t until the 65th minute, where Messi created a beautiful play from midfield. He passed it to Gonzalo Higuain only for Higuain to pass it back to him get through 3 defenders and get it in the net. The ball deflected of the post, which my roommates were calling the #luckydeflection, but still a goal from Messi got Argentina the 2-0 lead.
With 6 minutes left in the game, just when it looked like it was over for Bosnia, Forward Vedad Ibiševic cut down the lead to 2-1. Argentinian Fans were celebrating before Bosnia scored and after that got them worried and hoping that Argentina could defend the rest of the game to gain the three points.
In the end, Argentina was able to secure the 3 points to lead Group F. Argentina, although gained the three points, they will have to step up their game against Iran then Nigeria in order for them to be able to go on to the next stage and be able to win the cup.
Bosnia will face Nigeria on June 21st while Argentina faces Iran the same day and look to secure three more points and have a secure spot in the knockout stage.
