The National League East leading Philadelphia Phillies found out Tuesday afternoon that they would continue their 2019 campaign without Andrew McCutchen. The 32-year-old veteran suffered a torn ACL on Monday night in an 8-2 loss against the San Diego Padres. The news was reported by The Athletic’s Matt Gelb.
The injury occurred when McCutchen attempted to maneuver around a tag from Padres pitcher Eric Lauer.
The Phillies signed McCutchen to a three year deal worth $30MM this past offseason. The deal includes a $15MM club option and $3MM buyout.
What this means for the Phillies
In 59 games this season, McCutchen has accumulated 262 bats for a slash of .256/.378/.457. The five-time All Star took on time in center field after Odubel Herrera was put on administrative leave on May 28th due to being arrested and charged with domestic violence.
After acquiring Jay Bruce from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, the Phillies since called up 2017 draft pick Adam Haseley from AAA Lehigh Valley. Haseley will make his debut on Tuesday night in center against the Padres. Scott Kingery may also see more time, with most of his appearances coming in the outfield this season.
The outfield will have a different makeup than it did just two weeks ago. Against the Padres, the Phillies will see Bruce in left, Haseley in center, and Bryce Harper in his usual spot in right.
