Pumas Takes Down Club America

Club America and Pumas faced  in week 7 of the 2014 Apertura in Estadio Azteca.

Las Aguilas were sitting on the top of the Liga MX table thanks to a hot start on the tournament. While, the Pumas struggled to gain a spot in the qualifying zone. They came in week 7 sitting next-to-last place, only ahead of Monarcas Morelia.

The first half of the game, the possessions were even. However, America wanted to prove why they where the leaders and started shooting and build more opportunities to find the net. Unfortunately for Las Aguilas, they entered the second half with a 0-0 draw.

The second half seemed almost exactly like the first half. Club America was getting more and more shot opportunities, but they weren’t able to find the back of the net. Pumas’ counter attacks would always fall short or apart thanks to America’s defense. Las Aguilas had an opportunity when Jose Carlos Van Rankin picked up a yellow card for Pumas just outside of the box. But like in the rest of the game, the opportunity for Club America was squandered. Just a few minutes later, Ismael Sosa drew a yellow card for an unnecessary challenge on America’s defenseman Miguel Layun in the midfield.

Pumas had the best opportunity of the match with just ten minutes to go, Eduardo Herrera got the wide open look in the middle of the box, but he was not able to find his balance and booted the ball over the crossbar. Club America answered right back with a near goal of their own, but Martin Zuniga’s shot the ball just wide to the right.

When it appeared that the match was going to end in a draw, Dante Lopez found the back of the net on a deflected shot to score the only goal in the game. When the final whistle blew, it was Pumas who gave Club America their first loss of the Apertura.
