Edgar Benitez scored in the 36th minute as Paraguay beat Jamaica 1-0 on Tuesday to earn their first victory of the 2015 Copa America.
The Paraguayans were basically gifted the lead when Jamaican goalkeeper, Duwayne Kerr, failed to complete a clearance and bounced the ball off Edgar Benitez into the empty net.
In the second half, Roque Santa Cruz and Victor Caceres each came close to doubling the lead for the Albirroja but both floundered their chances.
Jamaica, who kept it close against Uruguay in their first match, pushed for an equalizer late on but failed to find the net against a robust Paraguayan defense.
Winfried Schafer’s men came close several times in the last few minutes, only to see their efforts go wide of the net.
The defeat means the Reggae Boyz are officially eliminated from the competition, while Paraguay increased their chances of reaching the next round of the competition.
