The Washington Nationals have won the 2019 World Series. Washington came on top of the Houston Astros thanks to a comeback led by Howie Kendrick. The final game of the series was a lopsided affair as the final score was 6-2.
A Pitcher’s Duel
It was all or nothing in Game Seven and it showed. Zack Greinke and Max Scherzer matched each other pitch for pitch during the first five innings. While both pitchers looked solid on the mound, Scherzer had to fight for his outs for most of the game. He threw more pitches and gave up an early homer to Yuli Gurriel. Houston added one more run in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single by Carlos Correa. Washington’s starter left the game in the fifth while Greinke showed off his fielding skills.
Howie Kendrick Lights Up Nationals
The game was flipped upside down at the start of the seventh inning. Houston’s starter made that one bad pitch in his outing and allowed a solo home run to Anthony Rendon to slice the lead in half, 2-1. Manager A.J. Hinch showed little patience and immediately called for the bullpen after a walk to Juan Soto. Then things got worse for them.
Will Harris came on in relief and was welcomed by a two-run homer by Kendrick. Minute Maid Park went quiet and the Nationals got the lead late in the game. Roberto Osuna managed to finish off the inning for a 3-2 score after seven.
Soto himself added one more run to the tally with an RBI single to drive Adam Eaton across the plate for a 4-2 lead. Time was running out for Houston and Washington was still on the attack. The Nationals didn’t make it any easier on them as Patrick Corbin was nothing but flawless in relief late in the game.
The ballgame quickly unraveled into a one-sided affair as Washington loaded up the bases in the top of the ninth before Eaton came through with an RBI hit. 6-2, people started heading for the exits.
Daniel Hudson closed things out for the Nationals in the bottom of the ninth, making the 2019 World Series the first in MLB, NBA, and NHL championship history to have the road team win all seven games.
And The MVP Goes To…
Stephen Strasburg was named the World Series MVP. He was key for his team getting the win in the must-win Game 6 a night earlier. He took home a brand new Chevy Camaro.
