Giants get Jake Peavy from Red Sox

The San Francisco Giants have acquired starting pitcher Jake Peavy from the Boston Red Sox for Minor-League pitching prospects Heath Hembree and Edwin EscobarCBS Sports’ Jon Heyman announced the trade late Saturday morning.

After a terrific April (1-0, 2.87 in five starts), Peavy fell fast. Since May 1, he is 0-9 with a 5.54 ERA in 15 starts. He last pitched on July 22, allowing 5 ER in 6.1 innings to the Toronto Blue Jays. His overall 2014 numbers are 1-9, 4.72 ERA, and 1.43 WHIP in 20 starts as of the trade.

Peavy fared much better in the National League as a member of the San Diego Padres from 2002 to mid-2009. He was 92-68 with a 3.29 ERA. However, he has not pitched much against the N.L. since his trade to the White Sox five years ago.

One thing many help Peavy. He will now pitch most of his games against the N.L. West. Only the Rockies (first) and Dodgers (third) are in the top six in runs scored in the National League. The Diamondbacks are seventh, the Giants are eighth, and the Padres are last. If he stays on his normal four days of rest, he would next pitch on Sunday, July 27, against the Dodgers.

The Giants enter play on July 26 leading the Dodgers by a half game in the N.L. West. Their starting rotation is seventh in the National League in ERA at 3.67.
