Atletico Madrid were able to secure another three points on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win over a struggling Villarreal team. Fernando Torres got the only goal of the game in the 74th minute as he came off the bench. Villarreal struggled to find the net today and have also struggled to find it in the past seven of their last ten games. With this, Villarreal seems to be in a drought and their hopes of moving up on La Liga table came to an end with today’s loss.

With this win, Atletico Madrid are now seven points clear of Sevilla and eight from Valencia to sit comfortably in third place and secure a spot in the UEFA Champions league next season. Fernando Torres got his second goal of the season on Wednesday night and proved to his team that he is still looking for improvement and wants a spot in the starting XI.

Villarreal looked strong in the field but could not get anything going as they were held scoreless throughout the match. They were also able to stop Atletico Madrid from scoring goals along with a great in form goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo.

The only goal that came in the match was in the 74th minute. Moi Gomes tried to clear the ball or at least past it back to one of his teammates and landed in front of Eric Bailly. Bailly went after the ball and felt Fernando Torres sneaking up behind him and caused him to trip. This allowed Torres to make a run and go one on one against the goalkeeper. Torres then rounded the goalkeeper and embarrassed the Villarreal defense, fooling Bailly once again with a juke. He then ran into the net and tapped it in to give his team a 1-0 lead late in the second half.

Atletico Madrid is out of all competitions and have no hopes of bringing in silverware this season but hope to secure a spot in the Champions League next season. Atletico Madrid will face Athletic Bilbao on Saturday while Villarreal face Deportivo Saturday night as well.

The man of the match goes out to none other than Fernando Torres for getting the only goal of the match and finishing the play, embarrassing the Villarreal defense.
