England kept their 100% record intact as they moved a step closer to qualifying for Euro 2016 with a routine 4-0 victory against Lithuania. Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck scored in the first half before goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane topped a brilliant team performance. Kane scored just 79 seconds after coming on to make his national team debut, as England cruised to the easy victory.
Spain’s post-2012 hangover continued as they had to work hard for a 1-0 win over Ukraine, thanks to an Alvaro Morata goal. The Spaniards remain second in group C after Slovakia brushed past Luxembourg 3-0 to maintain a perfect 5 in 5 record.
Meanwhile, Austria and Sweden both won to push clear of Russia in group G. Sweden’s win was highlighted by a freak Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal after a misplayed clearance by the Moldovan goalkeeper.
Russia’s game against Montenegro was cancelled after Russian keeper Igor Akinfeev was struck by a flare in the first minute. The game was delayed for 30 minutes after Akinfeev was knocked out but play was able to resume. However, more crowd trouble in the second half resulted in the game being postponed. Russia are now four points behind Sweden but do have a game in hand.
Euro 2016 qualifiers resumed over the weekend, and TheAOSN will be recapping the other fixtures, featuring Portugal, Germany, Ireland, and France
