Cruz Azul defeated group rival Chorrillo FC 3-0 to maintain a little bit of life in the CONCACAF Champions League in their quest to gain a spot in the quarter-final. It also may give them some inspiration towards La Liga MX. Like other games, Cruz Azul created a lot of options to score. They should have won 5-0 minimum, if it wasn’t for Rogelio Chavez who missed two penalty shots in both the 23rd and 63rd minute.
Minute 17, Mauro Formica took advantage of a ball that goalkeeper Junior Torres rejected from Marco Fabian to put Cruz Azul 1-0. Six minutes later Julio Dominguez wanted to head the ball that was coming from a corner kick, when he received a kick from Juan Meza, who extended his leg more than usual and caused a free penalty kick in favor of Cruz Azul.
Rogelio Chavez who’s an expert in converting goals was the man who kicked the penalty shot. He tried putting the ball away on the lower right corner, but the ball decided to go outside. Cruz Azul’s second goal came in the 33rd minute, when striker Ismael Valadez headed a shot that Chavez had centered. The ball went in, in the inferior left corner of the goalpost.
With a 2-0 lead Cruz Azul still made mistakes. Like Pablo Barrera who only 27 seconds into the game missed a great opportunity to score when he couldn’t give the ball any direction as so did Ismael Valadez who had a one on one with the goalkeeper on the 51st minute.
Juan Torres committed a foul over Mauro Formica and again another opportunity came to Chavez to redeem himself from the first penalty that he missed. Yet again Rogelio would sent the ball to hit the post, missing another opportunity and a goal. Some fans were mad that they even booed him.
Juan Torres saw the red card at the 93rd minute for a foul committed over Pablo Torres in his area. Marco Fabian who took the ball placed it in the center had no mercy and hit the ball as hard as he could to score the third and final goal of the night. With a victory over Chorrillo FC Cruz Azul has 4 points, who right now is in a tie with Alajuelense, who’s in the top of group 6. Cruz Azul would look forward to defeat the Costa Rican team in other for them to make it to the next phase. Luis Fernando Tena could rest with ease knowing that he’ll still be the coach with this victory.
