The fourth matchup of the quarterfinals had the host Brazil facing Colombia. Brazil comes with a narrow victory over Chile. Brazil didn’t have that great of a match against Chile but managed to come out on top in penalty kicks. Colombia has had an excellent world cup run with Falcao being ruled out due to an injury he picked up earlier in the year. Colombia defeated Uruguay to make it into the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. The first half began with a bang as Thiago Silva puts Brazil up with a 1-0 lead on the 7th minute.
Colombia tried to get the upper hand by scoring an equalizer but Brazil was playing better than any other game they have played so far in the tournament. Hulk and Neymar caused some stress to the Colombia defense with their constant attacking. Brazil had more chances to score but the Colombians stepped it up with their defense. The referee failed to caution players even after they committed fouls constantly. The first half finished with Brazil having a 1-0 lead over Colombia.
Colombia went into the second half with a hunger to score as it was noticed that Colombia was pressuring more. The Brazilian attack had a little downfall as many passes weren’t completed due to a lack of communication between teamates. The first substitution of the match had Adrian Ramos coming on for Victor Ibarno on the 46th minute. Thiago Silva received the first yellow card of the match on the 64th minute. People argued that the referee should have brought out the cards out since the first half of the match. James Rodriguez received the first yellow card for Colombia on the 68th minute. David Luiz scores the second goal for the Brazilians on the 69th minute from a marvelous free kick.
The secnd susbtituition for the Colombian side had Carlos Bacca replacing Teofilio Gutierrez on the 70th minute. Mario Yepes received the second yellow card for the Colmbians on the 71st minute after a hard challenge on the Brazilian captain. Julio Caesar committed a penalty on the 78th minute which resulted in him receiving a yellow card. The young Colombia stars, James Rodriguez scored the penalty to keep some hope for the Cafeteros.
The first substitution for the Brazilian side had Ramires replacing Hulk on the 83rd minute. Colombia started showing their good side in the last 15 minutes of the match. Hernanes replaced Paulinho on the 86th minute to put in some fresh legs to defend the lead for Brazil. Neymar was carried off in the 88th minute from an injury he received in the game from a hard challenge. Henrique replaced him to complete Brazil’s three substitutions. The match ended with Brazil moving on with a 2-1 victory over Colombia.
Great sportsmanship was noticed as Dani Alves, David Luiz, and Marcelo went up to cheer up James Rodriguez. David Luiz and James Rodriguez exchanged jerseys after the match ended. It is said that James Rodriguez is the player of the tournament for his great World Cup performance. Brazil will face Germany in the semifinals on Tuesday. Can Brazil defeat Germany?
