Coastal Carolina Wins Big South Title, Earns Tournament Bid
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, behind senior guard Warren Gillis’ 22 points and 6 assists, comfortably defeated Winthrop 81-70 in the Big South Conference championship game in Conway, SC on Sunday to book their passage to the NCAA Tournament.
This win marked Coastal Carolina’s 5th Big South title, and ensured their first back-to-back appearances in the Tournament in the school’s history. Head coach Cliff Ellis will be hoping to lead the squad to the school’s first Tournament win, having failed at the first hurdle in their previous 3 appearances.
Key contributors on this team besides Gillis are scoring leaders Josh Cameron (12.9 ppg), Elijah Wilson (10.8 ppg), and Shivaughn Wiggins (10.3 ppg); and leading rebounder Badou Diagne (7.5 rebounds per game). Cameron’s and Gillis’ senior leadership on the court will be especially key for this balanced offense.
