Standout outfielder Oscar Taveras has passed away at the age of 22. His agent confirmed that both the rising star and his girlfriend died in an automobile accident in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic as they drove from Sousa.
Taveras was considered the 2nd and 3rd best prospect in the minor leagues by mlb.com, Prospectus, and many other sites. He debuted for the Cardinals this year, playing in 80 games. He went on to hit for .239 and 3 home runs. He was expected to compete with Randal Grichuk for the starting right field position.
May the young man and his girlfriend rest in peace.
