Atletico Madrid was finally able to find their form on Saturday night as they were able to secure three points for the first time since March 1st as they tied against Sevilla, Valencia and Espanyol in the last three weeks. But this week was different as Atleti was seeing their chances of La Liga title or Champions League spot get away from their hands.
Diego Simeone and his side were able to get through Getafe with a strong start to the game. Atletico knew they were facing a weak Getafe team and knew that this game would be in their hands. With 59 points in La Liga table, they sit one point behind third place Valencia, five behind Real Madrid and six behind league leaders FC Barcelona. Fernando Torres was finally able to get a goal for the first time in La Liga competitions since he came in for Atletico Madrid back in January.
Atletico started out strong and was able to get a goal early in the first half. Koke was able to whip in a free-kick from the left side of the field as Atletico threathened with dead balls once again. Fernando Torres was able to rise beautifully to angle a phenomenal header over Getafe goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
In the 44th minute, Tiago found the net once again for Atletico as they made it 2-0 before the first half ended. Atletico punished Getafe once again as another free-kick was given to them. The free kick was whipped in towards the far right, with Tiago meeting the ball with his forehead and guiding it past the helpless goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
The game ended with the second half being scoreless as Atletico madrid was able to secure three points and be a point behind third place Valencia. The man of the match goes out to Fernando Torres as he was able to get his first goal in La Liga competition. Atletico Madrid faces Cordoba on April fourth as Getafe faces Deportivo La Coruna on April fifth.
