The 97th PGA Championship teed off Thursday morning as 156 golfers took their final shot at winning a major title in 2015, battling the elements of the Whistling Straits Golf Club. The fescue grass provided trouble; the various bunkers were tackled with fantastic shots; and the wind even gave the competitors a run for their money on the greens. The course setup is a links-style course fit for a major and after the first day, a multitude of the world’s best players ascended to the top of the leaderboard.
Dustin Johnson returned to Wisconsin with no hard feelings for what happened five years ago in the same tournament when he was hit with a two-stroke penalty that may have cost him his first major. Instead, he took advantage of the opportunity to once again get a good start at another major championship. The 31-year-old shot an opening round of 66, which has him in the coveted lead.
The Featured Group of the day consisted of defending champion Rory McIlroy, Masters and U.S. Open-Champion Jordan Spieth, and British Open-Champion Zach Johnson. McIlroy and Spieth both finished with rounds of 71, while Johnson settled for a three-over 75.
Biggest Movers:
David Lingmerth had the best round of the afternoon groups, chasing Johnson’s six-under and replied with a five-under 67. The Swede recorded five birdies on his first seven holes (six in total) and finds himself in sole possession of second.

Brooks Koepka started his third PGA Championship appearance with four bogeys, but regained his momentum on the back nine, recording five straight birdies on holes 10 – 14, including a chip-in on Hole No. 13. The 25-year-old finished with a round of 73 and sits tied for 55th.
After shooting 40 on his front nine, Brooks Koepka has made four straight birdies. This chip-in is the latest. http://t.co/pi1jXFen8h

Shot of the Day:
McIlroy put his second shot on the par 5 fifth hole in the water hazard adjacent to the green. Fortunately for him, the ball sat upright on the sand as the bunker flows into the water. Watch what happened next:
Rory McIlroy hit it in the water at No. 5, which didn’t stop him from hitting this shot. #QuickHits http://t.co/wrEKZW0391 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 13, 2015
